since day one, radiq has been showing an affinity for the afro-centric funkiness and carefully-honed sound design of modern days minimal music. as in many of his previous tracks, all six songs of >vida noir< has this certain kind of unyielding quality - long, hypnotic grooves with muted kick drum set the stage for more emancipated experiments in texture and sound design. on >a long hot summer break<, for example, the effect is utterly obvious as kicking its ass into gear with syncopated drums and strain of warm chords before animated vocal sample slips in like fingerprint. while deeply seductive interplay of those chugging percussion gives way to delighted horn of >a-dieu<, warm chord and acoustic guitar of >calling< is perfect example for radiq’s masterful sound and texture. >machine codes modified< has rather restrained structure for him, but tightly woven drums speaks eloquently about its carefully arranged funkiness and dance floor functionality. despite their repetitiveness, its surprising how well these productions forming cohesive solidarity as an album. presumably, it owes a lot to wide tonal vocabulary which is radiqs hallmark - these tracks has something concentrated, vivid qualities. this album sits just at the edge of the dance floor, but also performs its exceptional strength on intense home listening. dusky synth and truncated surge of bass of >vida noir< constructing something dark, before closing this album with modulated afro-acoustic guitar and deep falsetto voice (by the producer himself) of >rondo<. this album offers up an engaging and comprehensive amalgamation from the inquisitive sound by the maestro

after the unanimous global acclaim of glass eights (dial lp 22), john roberts returns with fences, his second full length offering on hamburgs dial records. from elegantly dusted chamber pop and semi-psychedelic acoustic musings to turgid orchestral dance floor fillers, roberts creates a beautifully collaged symphony of recorded violins, cellos, cracked guitars, detuned pianos, faded samples, broken drum machines and manipulated answering machine cassettes.

dont wanna go to ep features three deep and warmly textured productions. the title track is a creeper with its spoken vocal and popping synth work. take one step back matches smooth rhodes keys with sumptuous acoustic guitar and goosebump-inducing vocal. final cut honey bomb steps up the tempo and increases the funk. twisted electric riffs and echoing chimes working brilliantly together to create a dancefloor gem.

the recordings for the wires cracked were completed in a frenzied two week period in october of 2012. i had mentioned in discussing a previous albums construction that i prefer to forget how i build any particular electro-acoustic amalgam. this is so that i dont get to precious with them, so that i could refine them further, so that the sounds themselves speak beyond their aggregate parts. with the album being relatively fresh in my mind, i can still recall various components to the wires cracked -- the desolate howl of a metal screen activated by a desert wind, the hissing air compression from the cooling apparatus for a laser at the slac national accelerator laboratory operated by stanford university, and the tremolo rhythms from a thin wire that still get me thinking fondly of günter schickert -- but much of the caustic drone, thrumming reverberation, and tactile grit thoroughly escapes me. that is probably for the best, since these various parts speak to an existential rupturing, the collapse of the self, the aftershocks of dark energy, and a belief in the hope for renewal. with its non-placed devices and hard-to-pin-down aesthetic falling between electronic and psychedelic music and the warm-hued sounds of traditional acoustic instruments, burnt friedmans zokuhen,produced exclusively for vinyl, may be considered an extension of bokoboko. on this new double ep, too, the music focuses on uneven rhythms that dictate the groove for all the participating musical elements and display a formal logic to which all the instruments gladly succumb. with its even rhythm and proximity to dub reggae, the track kon ki (c2) shows that exceptions from the rule are permitted among the six new tracks and two re-worked bokoboko themes that round off this follow-up.
